By the Fall of 1969, the institute of the draft in the Vietnam War had stirred up unrest even amongst the United States' most hidden figures. Tensions rose at the infamous Rutgers University protest in New Brunswick, where the Jersey Devil emerged among the crowd of hippies and university students in a standoff with the law. Here the Jersey Devil can be seen with his notorious ululating call, stretching his jaw wide and tongue far, rallying the protesters to their call for peace. Sadly, police and state troopers claim to have misheard the Jersey Devil's bleating as gunfire and retaliated in an "act of self-defense." 13 people were killed in the incident, leaving 27 others wounded once the crowds dissipated.
This image shows a realistic Polaroid-style photo of the Jersey Devil protesting the draft with hippies in 1969. The scene includes peace signs and a police standoff.
