Alexander stood apart, wrapped in the familiar weight of his **cataphract** armor, his gaze fixed not on the priest but on the horizon, where the mountains gave way to the lands of the Seljuks and the unknown. His **kontos** spear was planted firmly in the earth beside him, a reminder of the duties he bore. Though his armor glinted in the light of dawn, his mind was clouded by the Emperor's orders—a task that demanded more than loyalty; it demanded a measure of faith in the Empire’s vision.

“Alexander, the priest begins the reading,” a voice murmured beside him. It was Niketas, a fellow cataphract and a veteran of the border skirmishes, whose gray-streaked hair and scarred visage bore witness to years of battle. Niketas was a man of faith, a warrior who never missed a service, and his eyes shone with reverence as he watched the priest.

Alexander nodded, though his thoughts were not on the scripture. Instead, he was recalling the Emperor’s words, delivered with solemnity and expectation in the halls of Constantinople. "Secure our lands, Alexander. The mountains must not be lost." It was a command that brooked no hesitation, a mission entrusted to him alone. Yet, he knew that behind the Emperor’s mandate were whispers of greater threats—rumors of Seljuk advances and whispers of crusading ambition stirring in the West.

As the priest’s voice rose in a crescendo, chanting, **_“Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison_”**, Alexander felt a flicker of unease, a reminder of the precarious balance he now had to maintain. The Emperor had given him a force, yet it was a small one for a mission of this gravity. These men, veterans and novices alike, were brave, but they were few, and the task before them was monumental.

With the final blessing of peace, the priest concluded the service, and the men murmured in response, their voices carrying across the hills like a quiet, unbroken line. Alexander watched them as they rose, some pressing the sign of the cross to their chests, others bowing their heads in silent prayer. Here, amid the rough lives of soldiers who had seen little but hardship, faith was a balm, a brief comfort against the darkness that encroached.

Niketas turned to Alexander. "These lands have been ours for centuries, but I fear the Emperor underestimates the enemy. Seljuk scouts were spotted not three days from here.”

Alexander’s jaw tightened, his gaze unwavering as he scanned the terrain below. “The Emperor’s faith is in these mountains, Niketas—and in us.”

The air was crisp with the chill of early morning as **Alexander Komnenos** and his small contingent of Byzantine soldiers stood assembled on the open hill overlooking the borderlands. The dawn sun cast long shadows over the mountains, illuminating the jagged cliffs and narrow valleys that marked Byzantium’s eastern edge, where empire met wilderness, and faith met fear.

Below, the gathered soldiers—men from the **Scholai Palatinae** and frontier garrisons alike—were observing the **Orthodox Christian** service with an unusual stillness, eyes cast down, their rough hands clasped in silent prayer. The scent of incense mingled with the earthy aroma of cold, damp soil and pine. An elderly priest, his long beard swaying slightly in the wind, chanted the familiar hymns, his voice wavering but steady, echoing across the mountainside.
