Nienna, Lady of Mercy (Silmarillion)

Nienna, Ainu of Valinor, one of the Aratar. The Lady of Pity, Sorrow, and Hope in Arda. Like many other Ainur, Nienna came into the created world during the Music of the Ainur, becoming subject to King Manwë and one of the great Valar. In the subsequent wars of Manwë against Melkor, Nienna lamented all the harm and wounds inflicted upon Arda by Melkor.

Nienna's Halls were located in the far west of Aman, near Mandos, and their windows looked beyond the walls of the world. Nienna rarely came to Valimar, the capital of Valinor, where joy reigned, but she often visited Mandos; she comforted the souls there if they called upon her and turned their sorrow into wisdom.

Those who heed Nienna learn pity, patience, and hope. One of those who often came to Nienna's Halls and learned from her was the Maia Olórin, later known as Gandalf.
