John William Godward

John William Godward (1861 – 1922) was a British painter known for his idealised depictions of women set against classical backdrops. His art style is characterised by a meticulous attention to detail, particularly in the rendering of textures such as marble, fabric, and skin, which he depicted with photographic precision. Godward primarily used oil paints on canvas, employing a technique that combined elements of Neo-Classicism and Academicism art with an intense focus on beauty and idealisation. His work is associated with the Victorian Neo-Classicism movement, where he continued the tradition of classical revivalism in art, though his style fell out of favour as Modernism began to take hold.
