Why is he smiling? There is no reason to smile looking at that big apple which had hit him - what a painful blow! And what a big bump on his head!

After some calculations - which cannot be listed here in the comments column - Isaac was certain: In both cases it is the same kind of force - a universal force of attraction between masses! (gravitational force)
Oh yes, the bump on the head still hurts a lot - but what did that mean in the face of such revolutionary thoughts ...
And if you look at the background of the picture, more and more apples are falling from the trees. It makes me laugh every time 😉 - even if Isaac had been sleeping somewhere else in the meadow, the chances of him getting hit by one of those apples would have been pretty high. In other words, nature just wanted Isaac to have this deep thought. The time was ripe. A new era in physics had begun ... initiated by a falling apple.

So - why is he smiling? Is there anything to laugh about when you've been painfully hit on the head and rudely awakened from your nap by a giant apple like this? Oh yes, there is!
For Isaac had been pondering the mysteries of "earth atttraction force" for a long time. And when he woke up and opened his eyes, he saw the crescent moon in the sky.
And suddenly the crucial question arose: Is there perhaps a connection between the force that pulls the apple towards the earth - and the force that keeps the moon in its orbit around the earth?
One need to know this: Without the Earth's gravitational pull on the moon, it would immediately leave its orbit and disappear into the vastness of space! And that would be a great pity. (It's like the Olympic hammer throw - when the athlete lets the moving steel ball go, it flies away. It doesn't stay on the circular path on its own!)
