Charon The Ferryman of The Underworld From Greek Mythology (Continued)

Charon is a figure in Greek mythology who ferries the souls of the dead across the rivers Styx and Acheron to Hades, the Greek underworld. Charon's duty is to row the souls across the rivers to the abode of the dead. The Greeks believed that the dead needed to pay Charon a coin to use his service, so a coin was placed in the mouth of the deceased. Charon was paid one obol, which was one-half of a scruple of silver or one-sixth of a drachma. If the soul was not buried with the required passage fee, the ghost would be fated to wander the banks of the river for a hundred years. Charon's boat is called the Broad Bottom Packet.
