Today was her niece’s birthday—small family gathering, lots of photos, relatives who liked things “as they were.”
I don’t want to explain today. I don’t want to be the story. ...

... So she left without the hijab. Just her hair tied up in a neat bun, a wool coat, a familiar sense of invisibility returning like an old coat: This is how I used to be. This should feel easier.

And for the first hour, it did.

The barista at her favorite café smiled like always.
A passerby didn’t look twice.
No weight of watching, no quiet recalibrations in other people’s eyes.

But when she passed the flower shop window before opening, something strange happened.
She caught her own reflection—and blinked. ...

... Is this me now? Or… was yesterday more honest?

Inside, the shop was the same: full of scent and stillness. But she wasn’t.

Throughout the morning, small moments pricked at her.

She caught herself reaching up to adjust the scarf that wasn’t there.
She avoided the mirror behind the counter.
She found herself explaining things more—talking too much, laughing a little too hard.

At noon, she arranged white lilies. As she folded the wrapping paper, she whispered under her breath:
"I feel… faded." ...

... The Pause

She stood in front of the mirror again.
Same morning light. Same soft hum of the city waking up outside.
But today… the scarf stayed in the drawer.

Mette touched her undercap, then let her hand drop.
Not today, she whispered, as if asking permission from someone invisible.
Her chest felt tight—not from guilt, exactly. Just a kind of aching tension. ...
