What a beautiful, abstract,  puzzle. I've looked it over carefully and as simple as it is a child would be very intellectually challenged and that's a good thing ! Abstraction is not easy for children to grasp but this would be a great thing to do together with a 5 year old. Such a teaching moment. What is abstraction? Yet they do it naturally. 
  The soft edges remind me of the way some of the dominos I use to use  matched corners with the soft edge and tiny diamond shape where they came together.   Great one!  You evolved it wonderfully.
