Flashman retired from active service in 1894, and settled in London. He wrote his memoirs, known as The Flashman Papers, which revealed his true character and exploits. He admitted that he was a coward, a liar, and a cheat, who always managed to get out of trouble and become a hero, despite his flaws. He also confessed his many sexual adventures, often with famous historical figures. His papers were discovered after his death, and published by George MacDonald Fraser, a historian and novelist, who provided extensive footnotes and references to support Flashman's account. Flashman's papers are considered a valuable source of historical information, as well as a humorous and satirical commentary on the 19th century.

Flashman was born in Leicestershire, England, and attended Rugby School, where he excelled in sports and languages. He joined the 11th Hussars as a cornet in 1840, and soon rose to the rank of captain. He was involved in many famous incidents, such as the Charge of the Light Brigade, the Retreat from Kabul, and the Battle of Little Bighorn. He also met many prominent figures, such as Queen Victoria, Abraham Lincoln, and Otto von Bismarck, and often acted as an envoy or a spy for the British government. He had a remarkable ability to blend in with different cultures and peoples, and often disguised himself as a native or a foreigner.
