Riempies are rawhide strips.  This traditional South African design of a woven net/lattice seat was originally developed to meet the needs of pioneer farmers.  Chairs needed to be lightweight, durable and field-maintainable for long journeys in ox wagons.

The needs of these "trek-boere" (travelling farmers) were far from unique, so I'm surprised that I haven't found reference to similar designs from other parts of the world.  If anyone knows of an equivalent design, I'd appreciate the pointer.
