Of all the journeys to Hell (specifically TO, rather than through, like Dante), the most interesting to me is the one the ancient Babylonians made. To get to Irkalla, the Babylonian underworld, you had to bribe seven gatekeepers, each with a piece of jewelry that was extremely difficult to obtain. Of course, it all paid off in the end, because when you got to Irkalla…there was no light, and you ate and drank dust for all eternity.
Literally. That’s it. Why spend your ghostly energy on getting that jewelry? Wouldn’t it be better to hang around some scenic location on Earth for all eternity? Of course, I’ve never been a Babylonian. Maybe they really liked dust.
