Depends on what the aspect ratio of "portrait" is. I find 9:16 (upright phone) far too narrow, so that leaves 3:4 which is  a good "portrait" format. (I make my pen/ink drawings on A3 paper, which corresponds with 3:4.)
Though square (1:1) is suitable for practically any theme.
