Hans Memling

Hans Memling (Jan van Menninghen; 1430/40 – 1494) was a German-born painter who moved to the Southern Netherlands where he became one of the leading artists in the Early Netherlandish painting movement. Memling's style is characterised by its meticulous detail, rich colours, and serene compositions, often depicting religious scenes and portraits. He primarily worked with oil paints on wood panels, creating works that are notable for their clarity and luminosity. Memling's art reflects the influence of the Flemish tradition, particularly the works of Jan van Eyck and Rogier van der Weyden, contributing significantly to the development of Northern Renaissance art.
