As of 2024, electric vehicles (EVs) remain significantly less likely to catch fire compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.
EVs: Approximately 25 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold, according to data from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board.
ICE Vehicles: Between 1,500 and 3,500 fires per 100,000 vehicles sold, based on estimates from the National Fire Protection Association.
This indicates that EVs are 60 to 140 times less likely to catch fire than ICE vehicles. Although EV fires can be more intense and difficult to extinguish, the overall risk remains substantially lower.
