"Kentoc'h mervel eget em zaotra" this is Brittany's motto. The legend says that Breton king Jean le Bon saw farmers pinning an ermine between their pitchforks and a muddy pond. Jean le Bon knew that ermines could swim really well.
"Why did the ermine chose to face the pitchforks?" He wondered. But then he realised: it was winter and the ermine had already her white fur. It probably did not want to stain it!
The king then ordered the farmers to let the small animal go, and decided that starting this day "Rather death than stain" would be Brittany's motto, and that the ermine should be the national animal, representing Brittany.
During WWII, many people in Brittany resisted the III. Reich with this motto. They would rather fight the Nazis than be stained by their ideology.
Nowadays, the ermine is still considered as the Breton national animal, and it is figuratively represented on the Breton flag.
A hyperrealistic image of an ermine near a muddy pond. The composition features intricate details, high contrast, and sharp focus to create a cinematic and atmospheric mood.

I did not manage to make an image representing the farmers pinning down the ermine, so sorry it's a bit of a cheap image, but the legend is really important to me and I still wanted to share it

The image is perfect and I love the animal itself, but your story below is really the crowning jewel of the whole creation. I didn't know it, and I'm passionate about legends and the origin of ideas, so thank you!
