When after 9 years into the infamous soap opera all of Adam Carrington's siblings - Steven, Fallon, Amanda, and Krystina - had been replaced by other actors, the latter three without explanation, the producers reversed the only explanation of Steven looking differently because of drastic plastic surgery after an ugly oil rig explosion. They aimed to outdo Dallas' dream season with the return of dead Bobby Ewing to become the talk of the nation.
So they deemed Adam to be the culprit behind it all, not even being a sibling of them!
He was supposed to be an alien that could shape shift buildings and rework peoples' memories of who they really are, replacing them all the time. For whatever reason.
They had already made Fallon survive a plane crash, but getting the new one abducted by alien Adam, and made even the new Amanda disappear and not remembered by any of the Carringtons. They had also already revealed Adam not be the son of Blake and Alexis.

3: But they left out explaining Adam's replacement. This idea of evil alien Adam made it eventually to the big screen as the science fiction classic "Dark City" in 1998.
2: However, for the re-union special of Dynasty in 1991 Al Corley really re-appeared as Steven Carrington, making his former oilrig accident null and void. And Adam was replaced by the long lost real Adam, i.e. yet another actor. Amanda didn't exist, but for dark reasons, the Carringtons preferred to keep the new Fallon and Krystina instead of the old ones.
1: They had also already re-hired Al Corley to return as the real Steven and also the only real of Blake's children! But just after a few scenes of jumping the shark even further, it transpired that for the means of 1989, production cost skyrocketed with the special effects. This is one of the few takes surviving of Adam in his true looks extending the living room table, doubling a lamp, and morphing the entire building. Before network simply pulled the plug. For the entire series.

4: The reality behind this: Believe it or not - everything - EVERYTHING - is entirely true. Save one little detail: Adam wasn't an alien and hence not involved in the real alien abuction of Fallon, and so this scene was never filmed. But it should have to bring any sense, however outlandish, back into the soap opera that replaced all of Blake Carrington's five children.
