The Round Table was first described by Wace in his Norman language adaptation of Geoffrey's 'Historia' finished in 1155. The symbolism of the Round Table developed over time and, by the close of the 12th Century, it had come to represent the chivalric order within Arthur's court - the Knights of the Round Table. The shape of the table itself is a symbol of equality amongst its members.
The number of Knights of the Round Table differ based on who is telling the story or writing history. It ranges from 12 to 1600 and anything in-between. The most well known names of those present are Lancelot, Perceval, Tristan, Agravain, Bedivere, Galahad, Gawain, Kay, Sagramore, and the traitor, Mordred.
I prefer to think that King Arthur was real (some history seems to point that way) and the glories of the Round Table are true. And why not? We all need to believe in something glorious every now and then.
This image shows a double exposure of a medieval king with a sword, superimposed on a round table of armored knights. The artwork is stygian and bold.
