Jake’s face was blank, his eyes hollow as he walked in step with his fellow soldiers, their expressions just as lifeless. Two years had passed since the Rapture—since that flash that had taken so many and left behind a world consumed by chaos. The war had only grown more savage after that, as if humanity, abandoned by the divine, had embraced its own destruction.

Jake’s fingers clenched around his rifle as they passed through the burned-out remains of the enemy’s heart. They had won, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that they had lost something far greater.

Behind him, the flag of the United North American States flapped in the polluted wind, carried by soldiers who once believed in the glory of their mission. Now, they were survivors—victors only by virtue of outlasting their enemies, not through righteousness or strength.

Jake glanced down at the dog tags that hung around his neck, alongside a small metal cross he had found in the debris months ago. It was a symbol he once scoffed at, but now it held a strange weight. It was a reminder of the preacher’s warning back in Miami. The memory of that man’s words still haunted Jake, though he would never admit it.

He couldn’t get the preacher’s voice out of his head, even as they marched through the desolation of victory.

In the two years since the Rapture, Jake’s life had changed in ways he could never have imagined. After returning to the frontlines, after watching men disappear from his unit, after realizing the preacher’s warnings had come true, Jake had tried to drown it all out. Tried to live the way he always had—drinking, fighting, living in the moment. But the world wasn’t the same.

The emptiness left behind by those who had been taken, the chaos that had followed—the world had become unrecognizable. He had fought harder, drank more, and tried to lose himself in the war. But in the end, it had all brought him back to one inescapable truth: something supernatural had occurred. He had survived, while others had vanished, and he was left with the question of why.

And then, one night in 2027, while on a brief leave from the front, he met a woman in a broken-down village. She was lost, like him—one of the countless souls left behind in the wake of the Rapture, searching for meaning in a world that had descended into madness. They found each other in the ruins, and for a brief moment, they clung to one another, trying to forget the horror outside.

That night, she became pregnant with their son, a child born in the aftermath of war and loss. They named him Daniel.

_May 15th, 2028 — Beijing, remnants of China_

The victory should have tasted sweet.

As Jake Harper marched through the streets of Beijing, rifle slung over his shoulder, the sound of boots on broken pavement echoed through the hollow remains of the enemy capital. The war was finally over. World War Three had come to its bloody, brutal end, and the Western Alliance—led by the shattered remnants of the once-mighty American Empire—had triumphed.

But there was no joy. No celebration. Only the stench of death.

The streets were littered with bodies—soldiers, civilians, all fallen during the final days of the war. The once-great city, now a sprawling graveyard, was filled with the remnants of a global conflict that had pushed humanity to the brink of annihilation. Buildings lay in ruin, their skeletal frames jutting into the ashen sky like broken teeth. The fires from the last airstrikes still smoldered in the distance, casting an eerie glow over the corpse-laden streets.
