The dodo (Raphus cucullatus) was a large, flightless bird endemic to the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. Standing about three feet tall and weighing up to 20 pounds, it evolved in isolation without natural predators, which made it fearless and vulnerable when humans arrived. First recorded by Dutch sailors in 1598, the dodo was hunted for food and faced devastation from invasive species like rats and pigs that consumed its eggs. Contrary to its reputation as clumsy and unintelligent, recent studies suggest the dodo was well-adapted to its environment and may have been as clever as modern pigeons, its closest living relatives. Sadly, the last widely accepted sighting was in 1662, and its extinction became a symbol of human-driven ecological loss
This image shows a dodo bird in a misty forest, surrounded by bioluminescent flora. The bird displays iridescent feathers and a melancholic expression, in a surreal fantasy style with soft lighting.
