It beat starving to death.
From the moment of first contact with Europeans, they insisted on trading precious stones and metals for elephant skins. From that point on, their hunting success dropped like a bowling ball off a tower.
The early 1800s adoption of summer suits and hats into the camouflage outfits did not help.

Yes, but once they realized there were no elephants to blend in with, the efficacy was in question. They were stampeded to death by buffalos a few times.
