From the corner, a younger man stepped forward, slick with the kind of nervous energy that made Sullivan’s skin itch. Patrick O’Leary. Fresh-faced. Eager. Too green.

“They’re sayin’ Doyle’s boys are makin’ moves, boss,” Patrick said, his voice tight. “Word’s they’re lookin’ to claim the docks.”

Sullivan turned, his mouth pulling into a slow, dangerous smile, the cigar still smoldering between his fingers. “Is that so?”

Patrick swallowed hard, glancing toward the floor. “Y-yes, sir. We… we could send a message, you know, just to remind them who owns that part of the city.”

The air in the room shifted as Sullivan stepped forward, his boots heavy on the worn wooden floor. His presence was like a cold blade against the skin, sharp and inevitable. He placed a hand on Patrick’s shoulder—firm, but not yet crushing.

“You think a message is all it’ll take?” he asked quietly, leaning closer, his breath thick with whiskey and smoke.

Patrick stammered, eyes wide, beads of sweat beginning to form on his brow. “I... I just meant—”

Sullivan cut him off with a chuckle, low and humorless. “No, boy. Words mean nothin' in this city. Not in our business. It’s blood they understand. Blood and fear.”

He let that sink in, the weight of his words pressing into the air like an unspoken threat. Then, just as quickly as it had come, the tension eased. Sullivan stepped back, turning to the window once more. His gaze was distant, but his mind was already working, calculating, planning.

“Gather the men,” he ordered, voice cold and final. “It’s time we remind Doyle who runs this city.”

Patrick nodded, almost tripping over his feet as he hurried out the door. Sullivan didn’t watch him go. Instead, he raised his cigar to his lips again, exhaling a long plume of smoke that drifted toward the cracked ceiling.

New York was hungry tonight. And John Sullivan had always known how to feed the beast.

John Sullivan stood by the fogged window, his cigar casting a slow-burning ember of orange into the dim light of the room. Outside, New York City groaned with the weight of its own ambition. A mist clung to the streets, wrapping around carriages and streetlamps like the ghosts of men who’d been buried too soon. He took another drag, filling the room with the acrid scent of tobacco and power, his eyes narrowing as he watched a shadow move in the alley below.

“Too quiet tonight,” he muttered, more to the smoke than to anyone in the room.
