Turns out the toxin, while lethal to the test subjects wasn't abke to kill off the wild colonies before the fungus in their hives mutated and became a natural detoxicant for the ants. Within a few weeks, in a round about fashion, the ants grew in size and became anthropomorphic...

...And since they out number the human voters, they now attend our schools
