The Xhosa People – The Painted Warriors & Healers

A Xhosa initiation camp is set deep within the rolling green hills of the Eastern Cape, surrounded by misty forests and ancient trees. A group of young Xhosa men, dressed in white sheepskin cloaks, sit in a sacred ceremonial hut, their faces painted with bold white clay markings that symbolize their rite of passage into manhood. The air is thick with the scent of burning medicinal herbs, while an elderly sangoma (traditional healer), dressed in brightly beaded garments, shakes a rattle made of animal bones, summoning the spirits of the ancestors.
