Thank you, Charlie. I apologize that most days I only come to NC to keep my streak up, post the image if it's good or download modified ones I've made in ImageFX. My eyesight seems to be rapidly getting worse and it distresses me no end. Reading is getting harder and I'll only type comments on NC when I'm not getting totally demoralized as it's so much harder to do so quickly AND be aware of the many typos I make. I take too long looking it over to check before posting.

My next appointment with the opthalmologist is early next month. I know they'll operate for the cataracts but there's nothing to be done for the AMD. Anyway, I'll be seeing friends tomorrow and that always cheers me up - that and all their hugs and laughter together. 

No apology is necessary at all.

Don't allow yourself to become distressed about your eyesight.  Unless there are significant complicating issues, the odds are strongly in your favour for a great outcome with the cataract / lens replacement.surgery.

While it may be true that little can be done for the AMD as such, it is certainly true that a great deal can be done to make the best use of remaining retinal function.  If you haven't already spoken with someone who deals with visual aids for AMD, that might be worth considering.  These are two related but very different specialities, and it would be rare to find a single person who is equally expert in both medical/surgical and rehabilitative/technical.  You may well find that you have far better practical vision than you've had for years, even if it is not what it was in your 20s.  A quick google search suggests that your greatest problem is going to be selecting the best of many specialists who practise near you.
