Edward leaned forward resting his forearms on the table. “Tell me... what's it like, being part of your—what do you call it? SG team?”
Fairbairn hesitated, her mug halfway to her lips. “It’s complicated. We're a brand new team so there's not a whole lot to tell. But what my mates tell me it's complicated. You step through the Stargate and the next thing you know you're on another world. And you never know what mission each mission brings. One day it's surveying and diplomacy, the next its firefights against enemies with ships the size of mountains.”
Edward whistled softly. “But you haven't done this long, yet you know so much.”
“I've been with the SGC for a while now. But I've mostly been working on ships in my career. But I know that training only takes you so far. The rest is grit. Standing by the people standing with the people beside you. Same as your militia.”

Edward let out a self-deprecating laugh. “We're just swing pikes and pray we don't make fools of ourselves,” he said.
“I bet you're better than you think. It's not polish that counts. It's about trust,” said Fairbairn.
Edward looked at her for a moment, something warm flickering in his eyes. Then he gestured toward her skirt. “Didn't think you don't owned a dress.”
Fairbairn snorted. “It's a skirt. And don't get used to it. Tomorrow I'll be back in boots and BDUs.”
“Shame.” Edward smiled. You wear it well.”
Fairbairn felt the tips of her ears and took another sip of ale to cover it. “Flattery won't get you extra points,” she said.
“Not flattery,” Edward replied. “Truth.”
