Grace O’Malley, also known as Gráinne Ní Mháille, was a prominent figure in 16th-century Irish history. Born around 1530, she was the head of the Ó Máille dynasty in the west of Ireland and became famous as a pirate, chieftain, and rebel during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I of England1.
She inherited her father’s role as chieftain and took over active leadership by land and sea. Her marriage to Dónal an Chogaidh Ó Flaithbheartaigh brought her greater wealth and influence. Notably, in 1593, when her sons and half-brother were taken captive by the English governor of Connacht, she sailed to England to petition Queen Elizabeth I for their release.
