An acquaintance of mine who lived there for a long time told me that it would be an incomplete motto, because it was hidden from the English, and that the implied part would be roughly (that I was born under the Lily - French royalty - before living under the rose - English royalty - with the added metaphor of the thorns of the rose for suffering).
