First, I FULLY agree with you. A man or a woman should not be judged by whether they prefer men or women for sexual partners.
About the other thing you said... the difference between Europe and America... I follow what's going on in the world, to keep myself informed. So I'll agree with you, but partly on that. Europe in general, the majority of its population, is more liberal on this issue than several states in the U.S. Not all though... always based on the information I have, California for example is just as if not more progressive on these issues than Europe. And it's not the only one. So I guess in the US there are quite a few progressive and conservative states on these issues. 
But these things are fluid. They change, all over the world. Sometimes the pendulum swings to one end, sometimes to the other...
