Everyone who attended her viewing—which was a great deal of people, including the king and the crown princess—had the dreadful experience of seeing the corpse look back at them, as Simone’s eyes simply refused to stay closed. Twice, the pallbearers complained of a “jostling” coming from inside the coffin, and twice the coffin was opened, and the queen found to be as dead as ever, though her eyes were wide and frightened. And as the gravedigger began to shovel down dirt, there was a great thump from below, which had to be investigated. The queen was still dead, but her eyes were now so desperate that it was as if they could speak, and were saying, “Mercy, mercy; do not bury us alive.” An attempt was made to remove the eyes, but they simply would not part with her skull, and much of the makeup applied for her viewing was removed in the process. In our world, it is generally not possible to suffer trauma on account of something your ancestors saw, but Wonderland is Wonderland.

This image could not be more ironic, as the Spades of Wonderland are known for one thing above all others: their thanatophobia. While this is usually a word that describes an irrationally intense fear of death, the average adult Spade will literally cover their ears and run at the mere mention of words like “death,” “funeral,” “coffin,” “heaven,” “hell,” and, of course, “skull.” Well-known is the tale of Calder Mien, an Eight of Spades who fainted immediately when a Club showed him her family’s prized goblin skull. While my research cannot explain the extremity of the phobia, I have, at long last, stumbled upon a possible origin: Simone the Sensible, the very first Queen of Spades, was blind her entire life, and when she died, her eyes suddenly came to life, darting around and looking at all the things and faces they had never before seen. Of course, the Spades were nonetheless obliged to bury their dead queen, but her funeral was a queer affair.
