Twilight on Painted Hill

In the fading light of a summer day in 1854, Tokahe Luta—Red First—sat astride his painted horse at the crest of the high ridge the Lakota called Wíyaka Lúta, or Red Feather Hill. He wore a headdress heavy with feathers earned through valor, sacrifice and honor.

The winds carried the scent of pine and distant fires. Below him, the land rolled out in gold and shadow, lit by a sky ablaze with colors only the spirits could conjure. Somewhere in the distance, settlers pushed westward, unaware that their wagons creaked across sacred hunting trails and burial grounds.

Tokahe Luta had returned from a council where young warriors were restless, old ones silent. He did not speak much. Instead, he rode to where his grandfather once told him the sky touches the earth—“Go there when you need answers,” the elder had said, “and the wind will carry what you must hear.”

Now, as the last rays of sunlight kissed his horse’s mane, Tokahe Luta closed his eyes. and waited for answers.
