Excellent!  Het doet me pijn om te zeggen dat deze iconische scènes van dieren die fermenterende marulavruchten eten, vrijwel zeker eerder voor het effect dan voor de nauwkeurigheid zijn opgezet. Jamie Uys, de filmmaker, heeft blijkbaar met de vrucht geknoeid. Toch zijn deze scènes het eerste waar de meeste mensen aan denken als ze het over "marula" hebben.

Jamie Uys haalde het idee daarentegen uit veel oudere verhalen. Het is mogelijk dat er nog steeds een kern van waarheid in zit, zelfs als zijn film is ontkracht. Eén theorie stelt dat olifanten inderdaad licht dronken kunnen worden. Een andere theorie is dat het helemaal niets met alcohol te maken heeft, maar met een gifstof in een insect dat in de bast van marulabomen leeft.
