Poison dart frogs are small, brightly colored amphibians native to Central and South America. Their vivid colors act as a warning to predators, as many species produce potent toxins on their skin. Indigenous people historically used their poison to tip blow darts, giving the frogs their name. Interestingly, captive poison dart frogs lose their toxicity because their diet (often alkaloid-rich insects) in the wild contributes to their poison production. Despite their dangerous reputation, they’re an essential part of their ecosystems and a fascinating example of nature’s chemical defenses!
