Also known (among other things) as the Red Roman, Kalahari Ferrari, Camel Spider or Sun Spider, a solifuge is an arachnid but not a true spider.
There are numerous tales of their cutting peoples' or animals' hair at night, leaving little bald spots, supposedly to gather nesting material. This is disputed, but ... It is why their common names include "haarskeerder" (hair-cutter/shaver) and "baardskeerder" (beard-cutter/shaver).
They also tend to run into shadows to avoid the sun (solifuge means "hide/flee from the sun"). Stories of them "chasing" people to remain in their shadow are plausible. This is the origin of the name Kalahari Ferrari.
They are non-venomous although their large jaws probably can inflict a painful nip if they feel sufficiently threatened and cannot escape.
A beautifully illustrated scene of a red-brown solifuge cutting a monk's hair, surrounded by ornate manuscript borders and intricate linework, reminiscent of classic children's book art
