I absolutely adore this city. Another friend of mine, who’s Italian, won’t stop talking about how bad it smells, but I think it’s beautiful. All hail the Grand Lady of the Lagoon!

I was there in the late 80s. Yes, the canal did not smell very good in the heat of summer. I don't know why it got so bad, given that it is literally aside an open sea and the canals should flush out. The color of the water was also yucky, but Venice is was beautiful regardless. Of course, a lot of the very old buildings needed maintenance and I think they have done a lot or repair since. Considering that the entire city, the buildings,  rest on some hydraulic system to stay afloat that started failing in some areas, that sounded quite scary to me. I need to look that up again to understand better how that works.
