You have no idea how many versions of this I went through just to get the wheelbase right. I went overboard with the selective editing too.
I think this is what many realistic mecha will end up looking like. Robotic legs are very complex and high-maintenance, and they don't do enough for many people's purposes that a good set of off-road wheels or treads can't. But a mech with legs can climb stairs and step over obstacles better. Hybrids of legs and wheels or treads are becoming more common.
The fictional robot that comes the closest to this is probably the Garuda from Star Fox 64, but this has wheels instead of treads. For those of you who don't want to look that up, it's the bot on the cartridge art.
