USS Houston (SSN-713)

The USS Houston (SSN-713) was a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered attack submarine commissioned in 1982 and the fourth U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. Built for Cold War service, she carried out intelligence-gathering, surveillance, and training missions across the Pacific, often operating with carrier strike groups and allied navies. Based out of Pearl Harbor and later Guam, Houston served for over 30 years, demonstrating the endurance and versatility of her class. She was decommissioned in 2016 and entered the Navy’s recycling program, closing another chapter in the proud legacy of ships named Houston, a name honoring both the city of Houston, Texas, and the famous cruiser lost in World War II.
