Extinct Creatures Daily Challenge #821: Jan 11, 2025
Trilobites first appeared approximately 521 million years ago, during the early Cambrian Period, which followed the Precambrian. Their emergence coincided with the Cambrian Explosion, a time of rapid diversification of life on Earth when many major animal groups first appeared in the fossil record.
Trilobites were among the most successful early animals, thriving in marine environments for around 270 million years before going extinct at the end of the Permian Period (~252 million years ago) during the Permian-Triassic Extinction Event.
This vibrant image depicts a thriving early Cambrian ocean ecosystem, teeming with trilobites, coral-like structures, and soft-bodied creatures, all set against a backdrop of towering underwater cliffs and mysterious, ancient energy.
