Did I really want to make a teapot with jellyfish or was I simply ironising over the trends for what usually wins in NTTs? It's kind of sad that following the trends gave me 3.76, my best score ever, but oh well, 20 credits can always be handy.

I'm with you! I've been experimenting the last few days and I got top 20% two days ago and am pretty sure I'll get at least that in 'wheels', with more or less what was pandering to the common denominator. On the one hand yes it's easier and credit cheaper, but on the other, it's not the kind of stuff I really want to create.
I think for challenges I don't really care about but will be an easy enter this is what I'll do from now on, just for the credits as you say.
You couldn’t be more right with your description 😂👌🏻🙌🏻🫶🏻 As much as I love fantasy and whimsical art (most of mine is in that category) I make sure to not participate with any cliche ones such as open books, teapots with animals or whatever inside, etc. 😂…..and I don’t even get the 20% 😂
