 It wasn't until the 19th Century that Japanese woodblock printing became prominent in Europe. This happened by chance: fine Japanese earthenware imported was wrapped in woodblock printed paper. Art Connoisseurs recognised the beauty of these and dealers began importing works by Japanese masters of Ukioy-e.  The style became prominent at that time and a new trend in art and design developed, called Japonisme.
