British trade and plantation schemes turned tin and rubber zones into export hinterlands; native land and livelihoods were restructured, labour was coerced on plantations and in mines, and disease, displacement and harsh working conditions raised mortality locally — violent pacifications and social collapse cost lives in the low thousands and left long economic dependency.
