Backstory of Merrin Thorne III, the Lionhearted Born under a blood-moon eclipse in the mist-wrapped glens of Old Brambleholt, Merrin Thorne III was the last heir of a once-great line of mouse-knights sworn to protect the Forest Realms. His grandfather, Merrin Thorne the First, fell in the Battle of Hollowroot defending the realm against the Night Crows. His father, Merrin Thorne II, vanished on a doomed pilgrimage into the Underbark searching for the lost relic Cinderglow, a sword said to burn with the courage of every hero who ever lived.

His title, the Lionhearted, was not self-given. It was earned in the shadowed conflict known as the Serpent War, when the demon-snake Virex the Uncoiler emerged from the Forgotten Roots to poison the hearts of forest creatures. Merrin, wielding Cinderglow, the very blade his father sought, led the resistance. His duel with Virex—three nights beneath the thundering stars—became legend.

The mouse-knights rose not merely to fight a beast, but to reclaim time itself from a being who would unmake it in the name of endless silence.

Generations passed. Stories became echoes. And then, born beneath a blood-moon, came Merrin Thorne III—a knight whose heart burned bright enough to be seen even in the deep places where Nharzith slithered unseen.

It was then that Nharzith, first-born of the Deep Coil, turned from watching to consuming. He devoured the Flame-Keepers of the Mice, swallowed their memories, and coiled himself around the roots of the World Tree to choke the dawn. He called it balance, but it was domination. The mousefolk named him The Deathless Coil, The Fang Beneath the Roots, and hid their young when the earth whispered his name.

At first, there was balance. The Snake-Folk watched the rise and fall of ages; the Mousefolk lit sparks of innovation and myth. But in the turning of the Third Dawn, when time became linear and death became real, the balance faltered. The Serpents, who shed but never died, saw death as a betrayal. The Mice, who embraced death as meaning, built songs and kingdoms and memories.

The Long Coil and the Flame: A Myth of Nharzith and the Mousefolk Long ago, before the world had names, the First Forest stretched from the root of the mountains to the edge of the stars. In those days, the land was wild, and all beings were shapes of thought and dream. From the sleeping warmth of the earth came the Serpentine Folk, wise in silence, long-lived, and bound to cycles of shadow and renewal. They coiled through the roots of the world, keepers of memory and time.

From the fire that danced in the heart of seeds came the Mousefolk, born of motion, curiosity, and defiance. They lived quick lives but burned bright, shaping the world with courage and change.
