Despite well-thought-out plans, Peter Pan avoided capture using his unfair advantage of flying - an advantage not shared by anyone else. Some members of society have unfairly considered Captain James Hook a villain without understanding his physical disabilities and mental trauma.
As the British navy was between wars with France and Spain, many navy officers and seamen were demobilized. Captain Hook’s next command was the brig Roger, known by the crew as “The Jolly Roger,” which was docked at the home port of Neverland. Captain Hook made his income by contracting and privateering with HM government contracts. On one of his voyages, he was attacked by an opponent with extraordinary abilities: a boy who could fly, use fairy dust, and conduct illegal acts on the high seas. During one of these altercations, the boy - Peter Pan - cut off Captain Hook’s left hand and fed it to a crocodile. This act of violence disfigured Captain Hook both physically and mentally. The crocodile, now having a taste for human flesh - namely Captain Hook’s - continues to chase him and is a constant source of mental anguish.
Captain James Hook began his Navy career at the age of 18, after completing his schooling. He joined the academy as a cadet and then became a midshipman on board the HMS Stark. Despite the challenges of Navy life, Hook adapted and thrived. He studied mathematics and navigation by night and attended to his duties by day. After serving for 10 years, including overseeing the refit of the Stark, he was offered command of his own bark, a modest ship but a command nonetheless. Captain Hook’s masterful seamanship and leadership skills caught the attention of his superiors, who praised him for balancing both discipline and reward in firm but fair doses.
