According to popular beliefs, the *spiridus* can appear in the form of a coin, which has the power to attract more money from rich people. Such a *spiridus* can be purchased in Bukovina, from a witch who brings water from nine wells and then puts a clean coin in this water, casting a spell: "I give you after the Unclean, together with this coin of ... (the name is said), to be his luck, wherever he spends the coin, you bring it back!". The man will take that coin and wear it for 9 days under his heel, in his shoes, without changing his shoes or washing himself, without talking to anyone or praying during this time. So that the money is not stolen by a *spiridus*, the women of Bukovina place a piece of incense in the money bag.

By its character, the *spiridus* can be compared to the protective spirit genie from Roman mythology, to the Elf and Kobold dwarves from the mythology of the Nordic peoples, to the family demon Lutin from the French, to the Brownie little man from Scottish tales, to the Leprechaun from Irish mythology and to the Domovoi spirit from Slavic mythology.

In Romanian traditions, the *spiridus* is a devil incarnate or depicted as an animal - often in the form of a chicken - that lives in a household, bringing good luck to its owner. The *spiridusi* are born from eggs: usually an abandoned egg that must be kept in the armpit and incubated there for 40 days. Once it hatches, that chicken is actually a goblin, which must be kept in a new red pot with onion skins.  Then it will fulfill all the wishes of its owner, and upon his death it can be sold for two pennies.
