Puff adders Bitis arietans are ambush predators with a nasty habit of basking in the sun on footpaths; they cannot move rapidly to escape until they have warmed up, so will bite in defence if someone steps too close to them. Most snakebite fatalities in Africa reportedly result from puff adder bites.
The Afrikaans word pofadder could also refer to a little town in the arid northernmost part of the Northern Cape, or to an offal sausage
A striking picture of a Puff Adder coiled on slate. The warm sunlight enhances the earthy tones and intricate textures, reminiscent of classic wildlife art.

Have friends from Zimbabwe and the father in particular hates snakes. I didn't understand why as the only ones around here are garter snakes, quite harmless and very beneficial. But he explained that there are so many poisonous and some that are VERY dangerous and you can be surprised by them when you're unaware. I'm grateful that we only have garter snakes here!
Eek! Not the snake, the thought of the vors named after it ... Aaargh!
