Fighting this lion was the First Labor of Hercules. It turned out the creature's hide was invulnerable to weapons. Hercules didn't know that at first -- his plan had been to shoot it with arrows until it died -- but after the arrows kept bouncing off, he realized he had to move in close enough to strangle it with his bare hands. (Apparently it was not immune to having its air supply cut off by brute force.)
