Indeed.  That SA ended up with the Spanish name (little grenade) used mainly in Central America seems implausible unless it was originally a trade name like Pawpaw for papaya.  Trade names are a clever way of extending the commercial value of Plant Breeder's Rights (something like plant patents) for cultivars - growers and marketers sell a succession of similar varieties under the same commercial name as the PBRs expire.
