Karzełek - Polish mining Fey

The Karzełek is a diminutive mine spirit from Polish folklore, particularly found in the legends of the Silesian region. Described as a small, elderly man with a hunched back, he wears workman’s clothes and carries a glowing lantern and a tiny pickaxe. His beard is often soot-stained, and his face, though wrinkled, is sharp-eyed and alert.
He lives deep in the earth, where he watches over veins of ore and the miners who seek them. If respected—greeted properly, offered crumbs or tobacco—he may guide miners to rich deposits or warn of cave-ins with faint tapping sounds. But if insulted or ignored, he can cause accidents, mislead workers into dangerous shafts, or withhold the mine’s bounty altogether.
Though mischievous at times, the Karzełek is not malevolent—he simply demands acknowledgment, and respects those who respect the land.
