The Ninth Legion was a veteran unit that served in Britain during the Roman occupation. Historical records show it was definitely stationed at York (Eboracum) in the early 2nd century AD. Then... it simply disappears from the historical record around 120-130 AD, with no clear explanation of what happened to it.
The popular legend suggests the entire legion of roughly 5,000 men marched north into Caledonia (Scotland) to suppress a rebellion and was completely annihilated by Celtic tribes, vanishing without a trace.
What historians actually think: The truth is probably less dramatic. Most scholars now believe the legion was likely:
- Transferred to the eastern frontier (possibly Germania or Judea) where records are scarcer
- Disbanded after suffering heavy losses in another campaign
- Gradually depleted and absorbed into other units
There's evidence of Ninth Legion veterans receiving honorable discharges in the 120s AD, which doesn't fit with total annihilation.
