about the closest rendition of an early 1600s English Herring fishing boat, crewed by about 6 men. This is the type of boat my first descendant here in America was a certified Master fisherman at age 24, after 12ys as apprenticeship under his father in Barnstable England. He came to what would later be called York Maine in 1630, and set up his herring fish stakes to dry his fish on a very tiny island , what was then called Dunnell Island, but is called today Jewell's ( the Fisherman Henry sold it to when he retired in the 1670s) island off Portland Maine. for his first 5 years, 1630 to 35, he sailed between his island and Barnstable to sell his dried herring at the Royal docks, two trips per year, half profit went to him, the other half to the crown to pay for his fishing boat that was built for him in the royal docks, a common event of the time. After the 5 years, he owned his boat free and clear and was called a Freeman, which meant he could operate completely on his own.
This image shows an English fishing boat from the early 1600s sailing off a rocky Atlantic coast. Fishing nets are hung over the side of the vessel.
