The Benin port of Quindah is the successor to the Whydah slave auction community. In the 1700s, before and after the forces of Dahomey conquered Whydah, European trading companies maintained outposts at the royal palace of the Whydah in their nearby capital at Savi. From there, they were within walking distance to the slave auctions in Whydah.

In 1860, Whydah was the port that sent the last recorded shipment of slaves to the United States aboard the "Clotilda" to Mobile (Alabama).  But the American Civil War did not put slave traders out of business.  It was not until 1885 that the last slave ship departed for Brazil (which had yet to abolish slavery) from what is now Benin (nee Dahomey).
